Journal: The pursuit of the tug

It’s all about the pursuit.

We all have our reasons for why we fish. And while we share many of the same reasons, we also differ in some as well. One thing we can all agree on, however, is that fly fishing is about much more than just fishing.

“Sometimes I think we as fly fishing geeks focus too much on the tug, and far too little on the pursuit of finding it.”

I often think back to the countless miles of traveling, the hours of lost sleep, the 4am mornings and the miles of dirt roads I’ve walked to find what I was looking for. Some days you find it, and other days you don’t. But that doesn’t change the desire to continue the pursuit of finding it.

I’ve often found that on the days when I don’t catch a single fish, I still manage to find exactly what I was looking for. Because the fish are just an added bonus to getting out, escaping the every day life and enjoying some time on the pursuit.

Many of my greatest memories of fly fishing are not about the fish I’ve caught. Many of them are about the travels and good times in pursuit of catching fish. Because fly fishing wouldn’t be all that fun if it were only about catching fish.

As you continue the unending quest to find that next tug on the line, I hope you take the time to enjoy the pursuit of it.
