I sit down at the desk, throw on some headphones and tie flies as often as I can. I do it because it’s relaxing; a good way to get away from work, stress and all the other daily challenges of life. I also do it in anticipation of getting back out on the water and hopefully, catching fish on flies that I tied.
Fly tying is therapeutic. It’s a time to escape. But it’s also a challenge, and one that I always welcome. As I strive to get better at tying flies, I also strive to make sure that I continue to enjoy it and keep it in perspective. They are not always pretty, but they are always fun to tie.
It’s the next best thing to actually getting out on a small stream and breathing in the awesome outdoors that I am super lucky to be able to enjoy. I have it pretty damn good these days and I haven’t forgotten that. No matter how stressful life gets, there are always worse ways to live and worse ways to spend my free time.
In that regard, I’m just thankful that I get to do what I do and enjoy it. Many out there would love that opportunity and will probably never get it.
