The basics of using a whip finishing tool.

Being a fly tying rookie, whip finishing was something that took some time to figure out. The whip finishing tool is something you either love or hate. The idea is that you create a secure knot to finish off your fly when done tying it. Many choose to whip finish by hand, others use a whip finishing tool to accomplish the task. I’m in the latter group.

Tying tip: I find that using a smaller whip finishing tool is easier. Whip finishing tools come in several different sizes and lengths and for me, the smaller size seems easier to work with and get used to. Experiment with it if you have the option to.
